The DC Chapter of the Autism Society of America presents Elder James N. Flowers, Jr. and Family in a concert to benefit the Summer Camp Fund on Friday, November 8, 2013, 6:30 p.m., at the District Heights Municipal Center, 2000 Marbury Drive, District Heights, MD 20747. With one-to-one professional staffing, the cost to attend camp is excessive for most families. Your generous contributions will provide camperships and help sustain Camp Claggett. Checks may be made payable to: DC Chapter, Autism Society of America (DCASA), 6616 Sisalbed Drive, Seat Pleasant, MD 20743.
For the 34th time, Autistic campers arrived at the Bishop Claggett Center in Buckeystown, MD, in August proclaiming: "Camp Claggett here we come!" One parent remarked, "That's the chant you'd hear if you could listen inside our car on the second Monday in August each year. My 40 year old son, Gil, looks forward to attending camp every year. He and Troy have been roommates since the camp's inception 34 years ago." This one week camping experience staffed by about a dozen certified special education teachers offers a respite for parents; and, an opportunity for persons with Autism ages 7 and up to complete craft projects, hike, swim, and enjoy views of the Catoctin Mountains.
Elder Flowers is pastor of the Shining Star Freewill Baptist Church in Seat Pleasant, MD. Blessed with the gift of singing and writing, he has performed as part of the Sons of Harmony, Gospel-laires, and Flowers Family Singers. His daughter, Minister Yolanda Flowers-Barnes, two sisters, and two granddaughters help the Flowers Family Singers spread God's word through song.
