Break the Silence Walkthon is a short walk (1.16 km or 3/4 a mile) around Laurel Hill Elementary School in the Community of Lorton, Virginia as a symbol of breaking the silence about Suicide. This event is intended to bring the community together and bring awareness to a serious concern that affects everyone. There will be informational tables setup to provide learning materials and information on suicide awareness. As part of our Girl Scout Silver Award Project we wanted to do something to raise awareness for a topic that is important to us and to our community. We came up with this topic through our personal experience with friends and family that have dealt with suicide. We chose a walkathon because we know all ages can participate and it’s family friendly. We are using our walkathon to educate and raise awareness for suicide. This is an important issue to us because: People in our age group are going through this We want to reach out to our community and help raise awareness so they know how to help people in need Suicide is a leading cause of death that can be prevented Suicide effects all members of communities including students, parents, siblings, grandparents and neighbors.
