WalMart cutting prices on healthy foods

It used to be that eating healthy by buying fresh fruits and vegetables was more expensive, but that is changing.  Under a new initiative, Walmart will make healthier food choices more affordable, develop seals for the front of packaging to make healthier food more identifiable, address food desert issues, and increase support for nutrition programs.

Walmart sells more groceries than any other company in the U.S. and changes made by its suppliers could have a big impact on American’s access to healthy food.

Walmart, saying it was inspired by first lady Michelle Obama’s campaign to fight childhood obesity, is stepping up to the plate, announcing on Thursday a five-year plan to lower salts, fats and sugars in thousands of its products, and dropping prices for healthy items

Walmart wants its products as well as the products of suppliers reformulated so sodium levels are reduced by 25 percent and sugars by 10 percent. Jacobson thinks Walmart’s insistence that suppliers reduce sodium could make a difference.

    Friday Night Frozen Pizza

Growing up at my house Friday night was our Frozen Pizza night.  If your family likes save money and loves pizza you bight be interested in the latest survey that ranked the best pizzas for the best deals.

    Best Pepperoni Pizzas:

Freschetta Brick Oven Pepperoni Pizza ($6.80, 21.75 oz., serves four). Can you really taste the four cheeses? The testers said they could, and that the “rich tomato flavor” enhanced the “pizzeria taste.” No wonder it tied for first place with our next brand.

Red Baron Fire Baked Pepperoni Pizza
($5.60, 19.86 oz., serves four). Described as “spicy,” “smoky” and “peppery,” this pie wowed the panel, who also saluted its “puffy crust,” “crisp bottom” and abundance of cheese. This isn’t pizza, folks, it’s love.

    Best Veggie Pizzas:

Third place: DiGiorno Crispy Flatbread Pizza Mushroom Medley ($6.89, 13 oz., serves 3). The mushroom lovers in the test group loved this pizza’s mix of cracker crust and fresh mushroom taste

Second place: American Flatbread Sun-dried Tomato and Mushroom Pizza ($12, 16.2 oz., serves three). Boasts a light, crunchy crust and a good blend of spices.

First Place: Whole Foods’ 365 Mediterranean Pizza ($5, 13.5 oz., serves three). The combination of feta cheese, spinach and kalamata olives drew raves from tasters, who praised the “perfect balance of sauce and toppings” and “great veggie combo.”

    Brenformation (the news)

The next step in the recovery of wounded Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords begins today. The 40-year old lawmaker will be moved this morning from University Medical Center in Tucson, Arizona to TIRR Memorial Hermann Rehabilitation Hospital in Houston, Texas. Giffords was shot along with 19 other people on January 8th, and six died.

If you’re thinking of getting a puppy for your kids…The Washington Animal Rescue League has taken in 13 dogs rescued from Missouri puppy mills. In all, 77 dogs were surrendered by two puppy mills after the breeders who acknowledged they could not properly care for the dogs. One dog died, seven did not make the trip to the Washington area due to pregnancy or illness and the rest have been divided among eight animal adoption agencies.

DC and Baltimore are rude…Travel & Leisure magazine ranks the rudest cities…DC is 5th, Baltimore is 7th. Why? They used things like the personality of the locals…we do rank number 1 for historical sites and monuments. (Maybe they should hand out copies of How to Win Friends and Influence People on Metro along with the paper.)

    Family Safety Tip

If you’re like us you want to do everything you can to protect your children’s innocence and purity.  So, next time you turn on the tv you might want to check your parental settings and block this new show on MTV….or talk to your kids about it.   It’s called “Skins” and the Parents Television Council is up in arms about it.

The first episode aired on Monday….It includes teenagers engaging in foul language, nudity, illegal drug use, illegal activity as well as adult relationship situations.  The Parents Television Council is actually asking the feds to investigate it for violating child explotation laws because it involves minors….many of the actors are under 18.

Taco Bell has announced that they are pulling their ads from the film.
