Life and Possibility starts at Home

President Obama spoke yesterday at The Memorial Service honoring those that lost their lives in the Tuscon, Arizona shooting.  In his speech he said…it is time to talk with each other “in a way that heals, not in a way that wounds...We may not be able to stop all evil in the world, but I know that how we treat one another is entirely up to us.”

Brennan says his goal is to speak life and possibility into people’s lives.  It starts at home.  Amanda says every night as a part of the bedtime routine with the kids she tells each one what she was “most proud of them for” that day.  Maybe it’s playing nicely with their siblings, or helping out a friend.

Tell us how you speak life and possibility into the lives of your family.

    Healthy Vending Machines…Oxymoron?

There’s never been a better time to be a vending machine, as long as you’re dispensing organic foods and snacks, that is.  As one of its final acts in a busy lame-duck session, Congress last month passed a law that requires officials to set nutritional standards for all foods sold in schools, including vending machines. The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 could be a boon for the rapidly growing $26.5 billion organic food industry.

“We’re at the beginning of a major movement in vending,” says Jolly Backer, founder of Fresh Healthy Vending, a San Diego startup that sells organic vending franchises. “It’s out with the junk food and in with the healthy food.”Vending machines that dispense snacks such as organic yogurt and granola bars, gluten-free snacks and fresh fruit will be rolling into schools, fitness clubs and office buildings. Often they will be replacing machines that have been around since the 1970s dispensing sugary sodas and snacks stuffed with trans-fats, high-fructose corn syrup and hydrogenated oils.  Full Story Here

    New at the National Cathedral

Darth Vader has some new neighbors at the National Cathedral. Two stone carvings are being created in the Cathedral’s Human Rights Porch depicting civil rights pioneer Rosa Parks and Mother Teresa. The sculptures are expected to be completed by Easter. The Parks statue will be done first, followed by the one for Mother Theresa.

But, wait there’s a statue of Darth Vader at the National Cathedral?  The Darth Vader sculpture resides outside. You can find it by looking high on the northwest tower. It was created in the 1980s after a decorative sculpture competition was held for children. Darth finished third in the contest and was honored with a place on the historic structure.

    Family Safety Tip

How much is too much TV?   Kids should watch no more than two hours of TV a day, but the average child watches over four hours. For every extra hour of TV, kids are less engaged in school, worse at math, and 10% more likely to be bullied. TV-addicted kids also snack more, exercise less, and have more body fat than kids who watch less TV.

    Brenformation (aka Brennan’s newscast)

Arlington Public Schools are going to get rid of all copies of a 4th grade social studies textbook from its classrooms because it’s got a lot of the facts wrong. It’s the book Our Virginia: Past and Present…last fall Virginia’s department of education said there were a number of historical errors in history books used in Arlington schools… The publisher has announced that it will cover all costs to replace the current print version and provide all school districts with new, corrected, editions this July.

There was a memorial service for the people who lost their lives in that tragic incident in Too-san Arizona…in it, President Obama revealed that Congresswoman Giffords – who was shot – opened her eyes for the first time since the shooting.

Yesterday was the 1 year anniversary of the earthquake in Haiti and Haitians marched through the streets of New York calling for a faster pace in getting relief efforts out to the country…they’re also hoping for cleaner water, better sanitation, and more jobs to help bring down the estimated 60-percent unemployment rate.

Facebook is adding Amber Alerts to news feeds to help find missing children.  There’s an Ambert Alert page for Virginia, Maryland and DC, and other states around the U.S.  To get the alerts, go to your state’s page and click the “like” button.
