Letter from a listener on the WGTS 91.9 Drive Through Difference.
Hi:
I wanted to write to you to tell you about my first experience with Drive-Thru Difference. It is an unusual, but rewarding story.
I’ve been hearing about the Drive-Thru Difference experiences on your station, and have been meaning to download your .PDF flyer and try it. Good idea BTW to explain to people why some complete stranger, although likely a Christian and not a stalker, was buying their meals. So today I printed off a big stack of flyers, put them in my car, and decided that tonight would be my inauguration into the program.
Last night on the way to my bible study at church I decided to give it a try. I first said a prayer asking Jesus to make this a smooth transaction, and to also make this a meaningful experience for someone who’d actually been having a bad day, and thus be lifted by the experience. I don’t know if it was because this was my first time doing this, but I was all of a sudden having a lot of mixed feelings about going through with it. I kept thinking maybe people didn’t want my charity. Maybe they’d think I was being pretentious in my actions. I was even thinking the drive-thru attendant would think I was crazy and not let me do it. I tend to overthink everything.
So ,committed, I go to Popeye’s drive-thru and it turns out I have to sit there for 5 minutes waiting for someone to pull in behind me. Plenty of time to further enhance my doubts and fears. I had committed to doing this tonight, but I didn’t want to be late for my bible study. Finally I see a lady pull up in a gray sedan and I’m looking at her in the rear view mirror while I’m placing my order, thinking, “lady, you are going to get a nice surprise tonight”, and I hoped for a big order. The transaction goes smoothly (thank you Jesus) and I give the flyer to the drive-thru attendant to give to the lady, and then quickly drove away, not looking back.
After my bible study class I was walking out with a lady who was telling me about what a horrible commute she’d had today. She said the Orange Line Metro had broken down twice on her way home, and she thought she would be late for bible study. We parked across from each other in the parking lot and when she and I had gotten into our cars I suddenly realized, looking across at her, it was the SAME WOMAN whose dinner I’d paid for in the drive thru. I didn’t even recognize her until I saw her sitting in that same gray car, but it was definitely her.
I was overwhelmed with emotion. I was so glad I’d helped someone who I knew for sure had had a bad day, just like I’d been praying for. I suddenly realized I’d been the one who had been blessed tonight. Jesus answered my prayer so quickly and directly, and touched my heart in a way that only He can.
Anyway this was such an amazing experience for me that I just had to share it with someone. Your Drive-Thru Difference program really has made a difference in my life. Like I said, I’ve got a whole stack of flyers in my car, and from this point forward I’ll never doubt, question, or be nervous that these small acts of kindness truly can (and do) make a difference in someone’s life. In this case it was the giver who’d been blessed, probably because I needed it most.
Thanks again for introducing the Drive-Thru Difference program, for WGTS, and for spreading the joy of God’s Word.
Warmest Regards,
Mike
